This page features a few speaking activities that I myself have created, as well as links to websites that give some fun speaking activity ideas. Around 2-3 new activities will be added to the list each month. If you have any activities for speaking or any of the categories please email them to me or add them to the contact me page.
In this activity, you will be participating in a debate against yourself.
1. Pick a topic. (One that you will actually be able to talk about in your target language)
2. Set a 2-3 min timer
3. Talk and give examples about the why of your topic
4. Repeat, pretending that you’re on the other side of the argument
In this activity, you will be creating your own type of ‘Mad Libs’. *You will need a stopwatch
1. First write down 10-20 words (use at least a few adjectives, nouns, and verbs.)
2. Have your stopwatch open and ready.
3. Starting with your first word, create a sentence or more that correlates in some way to the word.
- Every time that you have to stop to think of what to say, turn your stopwatch on,
once you have something to say again, you can stop it. You will continue to do
that until you get through your list of words.
*The goal of this exercise is to get you thinking & speaking quickly in your target language.
[you should write down at least 10 words (a mix of adjectives, nouns, verbs, etc.)]
In this activity, you will be watching youtube videos that ask you to find objects, people, etc. in the picture. This is a simple but fun way to practice both your vocab and your pronunciations!
1. Watch the videos. Some ask you to find an object while others will just display
the image and you just have to say all the things that you can see.
2. Once you find the object say it out loud. If you don’t know how to pronounce a word,
search it up!
3. And repeat!
***To Make this activity more exciting you could give yourself a time limit to find the object, say it aloud, and make sure to say it aloud correctly.
This activity is pretty simple. You will be watching the Guess The Word videos on youtube and try to guess the word!
There are 2 ways to play this game/activity:
(Version 1) - Play the video, figure out the 2 words in your native language, then translate it into your target language. Then guess the word in the target language. Or if you don’t know what the final word is in your target language without translating it first, then you can just figure out the word in your native language and search up what the word means in your target language.
(Version 2) - Play the video, Figure out the 2 words in your target language first, then solve for the final word. If you don’t know what the word is or can’t come up with it yourself, google will be your best friend. Search it up! After you have found all the words in your target language, you can check (google search or use your notes) to see if you got the words right.
This is a simple but effective way to practice both your vocabulary and speaking skills. While walking outside, look at the things around you and say them out loud. While saying what you see out aloud, make sure to practice the following:
1. Create sentences! Saying only one or two words won’t help you much when trying to have conversations with others on the spot.
2. Practice conjugating. For example, “While walking around my neighborhood, I’ve spotted 3 dogs, 2 cats, and a squirrel” is a sentence that you could use. It forces you to conjugate your verbs and utilizes much more of your vocab words.
3. Don’t worry about not knowing a word for something! For now, you can just replace unknown words in your native language and continue on the rest of the sentence in your target language.
